Annona x Sugarlata
Sugarlata
Origin story - A dreamy hybrid from John Painter's extensive collection. Annona reticulata pollen was used to hand-pollinate Annona squamosa flowers. Seeds from that fruit were planted by John to yield this beauty.
Flavor profile - Characteristics like the pulp's texture, consistency, and stone cells are more akin to A. squamosa than A. reticulata . Seed count is medium to high.
Field notes - Foliar sprays with minor minerals like calcium, magnesium, and boron are necessary once flowering begins. Fruit production is lackluster without adequate nutrition. The ripe fruit's scales are bordered with an eye-catching fluorescent pink color, likely a byproduct of the A. reticulata pedigree.
Cultivar status - Completely experimental and none have been released yet. Our aim is to make as many new sugarlata cultivars as we can and introduce the best of them to Florida's nursery trade in the years to come.
